KILPISJÄRVI - CLIMATE CHANGE
80 + 1 - A Journey around the World is the Ars Electronica Centre’s input into the Linz City celebrations as a European Capital of Culture 2009. The venture focuses on questions concerning the future of humanity and the planet. Researches, artists, philosophers, journalists and specialists in various fields as well as ordinary citizens are challenged to join the project. Linz is the hub of a virtual trip to 20 spots spanning the globe. Discussions and other interactions including visual and artistic media are carried out via internet connections between the city central square and the other partners in the venture between 17.6.-6.9.2009. Artistic performances and works are specifically produced for the project. Activities range from time-slotted, hosted discussions to continuously visible art works. Each of the chosen places represents a central question we are faced with in the future, such as biodiversity, aging, growth and so on.
Kilpisjärvi has been selected as a location epitomizing one of the most demanding questions about the future, namely climate change. This is an issue central to the scientific research performed by The University of Helsinki’s Kilpisjärvi Biological Station.
80+1 Kilpisjärvi - Climate Change stems from Kilpisjärvi’s unique, subarctic environment and nature, the scientific research the station performs and the Ars Bioarctica’s program, a program bringing art and science together through cooperation between the Finnish Society of Bioart and the Biological Station.
80+1 KILPISJÄRVI PRODUCTIONS
Water flea circus. For the past ten years German researcher Iris Zellmer has visited Kilpisjärvi examining water flees in arctic conditions looking for signs of any modifications brought about by climate change. Performance director Merja Talvela has linked with Zellmer to look at water flees with a view to engaging with the research through an artistic perspective. The scrutiny that water fleas undergo when under the microscope is turned on humans by posing questions about our human misconceptions and delusions when we examine nature.
Midnight sun. The midnight sun that circles Kilpisjärvi will be visible in the dark Central European night of Linz. The aim is to film the sun from top of the Saana fell, and send images as a live-streaming transmission to Linz where for four days it will be panned across the facades of the buildings in the square. The sun can also be tracked in real time on the internet for the duration of the whole project.
Climate Change Hub. At the core of the 80+1 project are the discussions and debates on our future visions of how to achieve a beneficial impact at both local and global level. Ars Bioarctica organizes live transmissions of art productions, artists’ statements, discussions, lectures and it will produce short documentaries from its base at the Kilpisjärvi Research Centre. The Kilpisjärvi climate change program will generate art by means of different works and Finnish visualisations of current research on climate change. Research in Finland on understanding the dynamics of climate change is multifaceted and international in scope: for example, it focuses on relationship between the globe, the atmosphere and the sun; the geophysics of the arctic environment; the geophysics of the Antarctic and the biology and ecosystems of the arctic zone. The program extends its range to cover societies and communities and everyday living as well as international political dimensions. It will include future scenarios for the conditions that will prevail in the natural and social worlds of the northern areas.
The research mentioned so far is mainly concentrated on the arctic and northern zones. The 80+1 project facilitates a different forum to share work and research on climate change. Via the internet the discussion is widened into a global discussion and transmitted to Linz, where there is a direct link and local experts and an audience ready to ask questions and engage in a dialogue with Kilpisjärvi. The events can also be followed and discussed on the internet, by letter or by using a ‘hot line’. The aim is to disseminate the discussions via Linz to the world following the events in Linz and recycle them back to Finland and to the Finnish forums.
