BIOTECH ART WORKSHOP

SymbioticA's Biological Art Workshop is an intensive four day workshop
dealing with hands on exploration of biological technologies and issues
stemming from their use. The workshop will introduce participants to issues,
concepts and techniques relating to contemporary art practices dealing with
the manipulation of life. The practical components include DNA extraction
and fingerprinting, genetic engineering, plant and animal tissue culture and
basic tissue engineering techniques. These tools of modern biology will be
demonstrated and performed through artistic engagement, which in turn will
open discussion about the broader philosophical and ethical implications
into the extent of human intervention with other living things. Emphasis is
placed on developing critical thought, ethical issues and cross-disciplinary
experimentation in art.
The workshop is run by SymbioticA's Director, Oron Catts and laboratory
research scientist Katharine Adcroft. SymbioticA is an artistic research
centre within the School of Anatomy and Human Biology at The University of
Western Australia dedicated to the research, learning and critique of life
sciences.
The workshop is a hands-on exploration of biological technologies and issues
stemming from their use, and serves as a theoretical and practical
introduction to the creation of biological art and is aimed at educating and
training artists from the Nordic Countries and Europe in issues of
biotechnology and the life sciences. The workshop will teach hands on
engagement with these technologies in order to be able to carry out and
critique manipulation of living systems from an informed practical
perspective.
At the end of the week, the ideas explored in the workshop will be opened
out with a public discussion event.
The workshop will be part of Article|08 - biannual exhibition for unstable
and electronic art forms taking place in Stavanger 15.-30.November.
The workshop is realized through cooperation with the Department of
Mathematics and Natural Sciences at the University of Stavanger.
SymbioticA, The Centre of Excellence in Biological Arts is a jointly funded
initiative between The University of Western Australia and the Western
Australian Department of Culture and the Arts.
Attendance and Conditions
Attendance at the workshop will be by selection through open submission or
by invitation. The selection will be made by Hege Tapio from i/o/lab, Jens
Hauser co-curator of Article|08 and Oron Catts from SymbioticA.
There is no cost to selected participants to attend the workshop, but
accommodation, travel and other expenses will not be covered.

hege@iolab.no, giving a short artistic statement, why you want to join the
workshop and how it will benefit your work. Please attach cv and images (1MB
MAXIMUM) and/or give urls to examples of work.
i/o/lab believes that the effects of the workshop will be felt in the
long-term, as the artists, having learned the technology, will start working
on their own biotech projects, which i/o/lab may choose to commission or
assist to be produced, as well as promote nationally and internationally.
